Brisbane Writers Festival – Workshop
Self-editing secrets unveiled

Bookings appear to be going well for my workshop at Brisbane Writers’ Festival on behalf of the Society of Editors. It was very well received in 2008, when I first ran it and I’m looking forward to doing it again. It’s also an honour to be asked by the Society to represent them.
Practical details: WS24, Sunday 5 September, 1.30–4.30pm, State Library, Meeting Room 1B. Book at BWF ($75/$68).
In a bid to help writers think editorially I’ll start with analysis of writing that works, drawing on several editors’ thinking. Then I’ll boldly go where few editors have gone before and do a ‘performance edit’ – sharing my thinking about decisions and choices as I edit a short passage. Finally we’ll do a group edit of short fiction and non-fiction – giving writers practice at figuring out what’s going wrong, ways to improve it, and traps to avoid, drawing on the thinking of the whole group. After that, I figure participants will race home to edit their work with greater skill and confidence.
